Meaning of the names

Since I was a kid, I have always been in love with volcanoes - I have already named a cat after the mightiest Icelandic volcano, Hekla -, and I have always thought that volcano names suited those legendary cats, so powerful, stunning, mysterious. When I saw Sohvi's all red and tortie litter, I thought : here is my volcano litter ! And since it's a "J" year in France, all names start with J'.

Vesuvio : Situated in the bay of Naples, the Vesuvio is thought to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth, because of his explosive and unpredictable temper. In 79 A.D., his pyroclastic flow wiped Pompei and Herculanum off the map.

Stromboli : the Stromboli is located on the Aeolian Islands, in Sicily. This effusive volcano erupts very often, and at night, one can admire his red lava flows shimmering in the darkness.

Kilauea : one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, he is situated on Hawaii the Big Island. He constantly spites out flows of lava which reshape the landscape and widen the island. Hawaian mythology says he is the house of Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes.

Mauna Loa : the highest volcano summit on Earth, also located on Hawaii the Big Island. He is famous for his wide caldeiras and his lava tubes.
